Trans & Queer Voices
of the San Gabriel Valley

The San Gabriel Valley (SGV) is the most culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse communities in LA County. Home to 2 million residents, its estimated that 120,000 Trans & Queer (LGBTQIA2S+) people live in SGV. Through the 478 responses we received through our survey, we found that Trans & Queer youth generally do not feel SGV is a safe space, with high rates of instability and limited access to resources.

Despite this, Trans & Queer community are highly engaged with the community. Perhaps as a result of the violence and discrimination the Trans & Queer community experiences daily, queer people take care of their own when their local officials fail to do so. What is abundantly clear is that Trans & Queer people know exactly what they want to see in their San Gabriel Valley. There is a strong need and desire for resources, programs, visibility, safety, and support to help Trans & Queer Gabrielinos thrive at home.

Demographics

478 individuals who identified as LGBTQIA2S+ filled out our survey.

Gender-affirming care is a basic need for many TGI people.

All TGI groups report the highest rates of having or desiring the following types of gender-affirming care:

  • Therapy

  • Hormone replacement therapy

  • Top surgery (breast/chest removal, reduction, or augmentation)

When asked about barriers, common answers were related to providers, cost or insurance.

  • Providers lacked knowledge about gender-affirming care or TGI people generally misgendered by providers and refused care

Here’s a breakdown of our TGI responses.

Resources in the SGV

Space is Limited

  • Unlike West Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles, the SGV is limited in resources and community spaces specific for Trans & Queer people

People Leave for Basic Needs

  • The data reinforces the common experience of SGV residents having to leave the SGV

  • More than half with a specialist provider, receive care outside of the SGV

  • When there are resources, they are often not culturally relevant and difficult to access

Low City Satisfaction

  • Overall satisfaction numbers are low

  • Participants expressed a need for more from their city leadership

Here’s a breakdown of what we’ve found.
